David Awadalla, MSW, BSHP, is a Public Health Advisor with SAMHSA’s Office of Recovery. David led the development of SAMHSA’s National Model Standards for Peer Support Certification, called for in President Biden’s 2022 Unity Agenda, and currently serves as the SAMHSA Lead for the Peer Recovery Center of Excellence and the Office of Recovery’s criminal justice, re-entry, and collegiate recovery initiatives. David also co-leads the National Harm Reduction Technical Assistance Center (NHRTAC), in partnership with SAMHSA’s Harm Reduction Lead and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Overdose Prevention. Prior to transitioning to the federal level, David served as the State Opioid Consultant for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), where he led several state-wide overdose prevention efforts. David also identifies as a person in recovery.
