Director of Neuropsychological and Psychological Services Caron Treatment Centers
The target organ in substance use disorder is the brain. Yet, most treatment protocols do not evaluate physical changes in the brain or how those changes impact its function. Understanding physical changes in the brain, as well as how functions are compromised in SUD is equally as important as addressing the psychological aspects. This session will address how an integrative, intradisciplinary approach that utilizes today’s technologies, learnings from neuroscience, neuropsychology and treatments developed for other brain diseases and injuries can transform addiction treatment and provide measurable, meaningful outcomes for individuals and families struggling with this disease.
Learning Objectives:
Identify key areas of the brain impacted by substance use disorders
Describe how today’s technologies can diagnose and assess brain dysfunction
Understand the use of brain health assessments to better target SUD treatment and how to use these to measure outcomes (healing)
